Their first name, what they bought, and one detail from your side of the order. Leave out the coupon and the review request, which turn thanks into a flyer.

Do customers notice a handwritten note?

Yes, mostly because so little mail is personal. US households read 60 per cent of advertising mail from companies they already buy from, against 26 per cent from strangers, and received 3.4 personal letters in 2024, down from 8.4 in 2014 (USPS Household Diary Study, FY 2024).

Writers also guess wrong about how a note lands. In Amit Kumar and Nicholas Epley's 2018 experiments, writers predicted recipients' surprise at 6.0 out of 10. Recipients reported 7.9. In the researchers' words, "Expressers significantly underestimated how surprised recipients would be about why expressers were grateful" (University of Chicago News).

Two limits. No large study isolates handwritten business cards. And a handwritten request is not the same as handwriting: Irish tax officials got 36 per cent of businesses to reply with a handwritten Post-it, against 19.2 per cent without (Behavioural Insights Team), yet a hand-signed letter beat a scanned signature by only 79.1 per cent to 78.4 per cent (BMC Health Services Research). What counts is a note that feels meant for one person.
