How open when letters work on a card
Up to eight letters on one card, each in its own envelope.
A label and a letter
What it is for, like “Open when you can't sleep”, and the letter inside.
Sealed until a day
Give a letter a date and it stays locked until then, with a count of the days left.
The rest, on trust
A letter with no date opens when they tap it. As with paper, the waiting is up to them.
One link for them all
They find the envelopes inside the card, with the ones they've read marked.
Open when letter ideas
A label for the envelope and a first line for the letter. Copy one, then make it sound like you.
For a partner
Open when you miss me
So you miss me. Good, because I miss you too. Put our song on, make the tea too sweet the way I do, and know I'm thinking of you right now.
Make it yours: Swap the song and the tea for your own small habit.
Open on our anniversary
Happy anniversary. I'd choose you all over again, and I'd still let you pick the restaurant. Here's to the next year and every one after it.
Open when we've had a fight
You're still cross, and that's fair. Read this anyway: I love you more than I love being right, and I'll say sorry first.
Make it yours: Keep it short. This one is for the worst moment, not the analysis.

Long distance
Open when you can't sleep
It's late and your mind won't stop. Put the phone face down, breathe slowly, and picture me snoring next to you. Text me if it doesn't work.
Open when you're counting the days
However many are left, every one brings me closer. Cross today off. I'm doing the same on my side of the map.
Make it yours: Name the date you'll see each other, if you know it.
Open when you need a hug
This is the hug, in writing: arms all the way round, and I don't let go first. Save the real one for the airport.
Make it yours: Swap the airport for wherever you'll meet next.

For a best friend
Open when you need a laugh
Remember when we got lost looking for that café and ended up at a stranger's wedding? I still laugh about it in meetings. You're welcome.
Make it yours: Swap in the story you two still tell.
Open when you doubt yourself
Read this twice. You're cleverer, braver and funnier than you think, and I have years of evidence. Now go and do the thing.

Leaving home: college or a new job
Open on your first day
First day. You'll be nervous, then fine, then brilliant. Eat a proper lunch, ask one question, and call me tonight with everything.
Open when you feel homesick
Home is right where you left it. The kitchen still smells of dal and your room hasn't changed, except the cupboard. Sorry. We're so proud of you.
Make it yours: Swap the dal for whatever your kitchen smells of.

How to write open when letters
- Pick moments that will really come: a first day, a bad night, a known date.
- Keep each one short, and end with something to do.
- Mix them: funny, tender, and one practical (where the spare key is).
Questions
- When does a dated letter open?
- At the start of its day, India time. Until then its words are not sent to their phone at all.
- Can the whole card open on a set day?
- Yes. Once it is unlocked, choose when the link opens. Until then it shows a countdown.
- Are there ready-written sets?
- Yes, around festivals. In the letters, pick Five days of Diwali, Christmas to New Year or Valentine's Week and a set is written for you, each letter sealed until its day. Rewrite them as you like.
- Can only they open it?
- Yes, if you like. Set a question only they can answer, and the card opens when they get it right.
- Can they write back?
- Yes, with a heart, a line or a voice note. It comes to you by email, and only you see it.
- Is it free?
- Making and previewing a card is free, and only you can see it. You pay once per card when you unlock it to send.
