What goes in a sorry card

Only what helps them hear it.

  • Your apology

Start from a blank page or a plain first line, and say it in your own words.

  • A quiet look

Olive leaves and a small dove in soft light, with tender music they can turn off, or none.

  • Nothing to play

No cake to cut and nothing to scratch: an apology gets none of the little rituals other cards have.

  • A way to answer

They can send back a heart, a line or a voice note, when they choose. Only you see it.

Sorry messages to start from

Short and plain is kindest. Swap in what really happened.

  • A partner

I'm sorry for what I said last night. You didn't deserve it, and I've thought about little else since. I'd like to talk when you're ready.

Make it yours: Name the real moment, not "everything".

  • A friend

I'm sorry I missed your big day. There is no good excuse and I won't make one. I miss you, and I'd like to make it up to you.

Make it yours: Say which day it was.

  • Your parents

Amma, Papa, I'm sorry for how I spoke to you. You were worried because you love me, and I made it about me.

  • A colleague

I'm sorry for how I handled Monday's meeting. I spoke over you, and your point was the right one. It won't happen again.

Make it yours: Name the meeting or the moment.

  • When you forgot

I forgot, and I'm sorry. You matter far more than my calendar suggests. Let me take you out this week, on a day you pick.

Make it yours: Say what you forgot.

  • A brother or sister

I'm sorry. I was unfair, and you were right to be angry. Can we start again, on your terms?

  • Short

I was wrong. I'm sorry. I'd like to make it right.

How to say sorry in a card

  • Name what you did in one sentence. "I'm sorry you were upset" is not an apology.
  • Leave out "but". Everything after it undoes the sorry.
  • Say what will change, and promise only what you will do.
  • Don't ask for an answer. Let them reply when they are ready.
