A good corporate Diwali gift note is three lines: the person's name, one true thing about the year you worked together, and a Diwali greeting signed by a named person. Write it in the language the recipient speaks at home when you can. Diwali is on Sunday 8 November in 2026, so notes should be ordered by mid-October. Twenty messages to copy follow.
What should a Diwali gift message to a client say?
Say their name, thank them for one real thing from this year, wish them and their family a happy Diwali, and sign it yourself. Keep it to three or four lines. Leave out your product, your new price list and any offer. The gift says "we value you". The note should say why, in words that fit only this client.
The reason is simple: nearly every company sends a box. Chococraft, a gifting company, puts India's corporate gifting market at about ₹14,101 crore in 2024, from roughly ₹12,000 crore in 2022. That is a vendor's estimate, not an audited figure, but the direction is not in doubt (Chococraft). When every desk has three boxes of dry fruit, the note is the only part that can be yours.
Does a handwritten note with a gift make a difference?
For one person at a time, yes. For a mass mailing, no. A study of 1,232 customers of an online beauty shop found those who got a handwritten thank-you later spent about twice as much as those who got none, while a typed note did nothing. The effect shrank or vanished when the note came with a coupon or a free sample.
That study, by Sanghwa Kim, Jeonghye Choi and Seung Hyun Kim, ran in the Journal of Interactive Marketing in 2022 (Science Says summary). Two lessons for Diwali. First, no discount code on the note. Second, the gift should not drown the words: a line that names the person matters more than a bigger hamper.
Now the honest limit. In 2025, Maja Adena, Steffen Huck and Levent Neyse sent thank-you postcards to past donors of a German opera house. Handwritten cards got a 19.3 per cent response and printed ones 18.7 per cent, which is no real difference (Experimental Economics). The same sentence in ink on 5,000 cards is still a mass mailing. What works is the line only you could write.
Should you write in the recipient's language?
Yes, when you know it and the relationship is warm. A dealer in Coimbatore who gets his Diwali note in Tamil knows someone thought about him, not a list. If you are unsure which language someone prefers, use English for the message and add the greeting in their script. Ask a colleague who reads the language to check it first.
India has many first languages. The 2011 Census grouped 19,569 reported mother tongues into 121 languages, 22 of them scheduled languages (The India Forum, on Census 2011). A national client list will cross five or six of them.
Customary greetings, with transliteration and meaning:
- Hindi: दीपावली की हार्दिक शुभकामनाएँ (Deepavali ki haardik shubhkaamnaayein), "Heartfelt Diwali wishes".
- Hindi, short: शुभ दीपावली (Shubh Deepavali), "Auspicious Diwali".
- Marathi: दिवाळीच्या हार्दिक शुभेच्छा (Diwalichya haardik shubhechha), "Heartfelt Diwali wishes".
- Gujarati: દિવાળીની હાર્દિક શુભકામનાઓ (Diwali ni haardik shubhkaamnao), "Heartfelt Diwali wishes".
- Tamil: இனிய தீபாவளி நல்வாழ்த்துகள் (Iniya Deepavali nalvaazhthukkal), "Warm Deepavali wishes".
- Bengali: শুভ দীপাবলি (Shubho Dipaboli), "Auspicious Diwali".
Two cautions. Not everyone on your list celebrates Diwali, so a plain "season's greetings and thank you for this year" is kinder than a guess. And keep images of deities off bulk business cards. A diya is always safe.

"Nutan Varshabhinandan" is the Gujarati new year greeting. The Gujarati new year falls just after Diwali.
When should you order Diwali notes?
Order by mid-October for India, and by early October for anyone abroad. Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November in 2026, with Dhanteras on Friday 6 November (Drik Panchang). Gifts are usually handed over in the week or two before. A note that arrives after the lamps are out has missed its moment.
| Who | Note should arrive | Order by | How to send the list |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clients in India | 26 October to 5 November | 15 October | Spreadsheet with a "one line" column |
| Employees, at home | The week of 2 November | 20 October | HR's address sheet, a watched Google Sheet |
| Vendors and dealers | Before Dhanteras, 6 November | 15 October | CRM list from HubSpot or Zoho |
| Anyone abroad | By 6 November | First week of October | Same sheet. See how long mail takes |
These are our planning dates, not delivery promises. Post inside India takes days. Post abroad takes one to three weeks.
How do you send notes in bulk from a spreadsheet?
Put one person on each row: name, address with PIN code, language, and the one line only you could write about them. MailMyCard writes each row as its own card with a real pen, in any of 112 languages and scripts, and posts it to that person's address from Bangalore. A pilot of 50 cards is $8.99 a card, and the price falls with volume.
The spreadsheet is the real work. Ask each account manager to fill in the "one line" column for their own clients. Ten minutes each is enough. A row with no line gets a plain greeting, which is fine, but it is the rows with a line that earn the postage.
Each card goes by post to the recipient, so it arrives beside the gift, not inside the box. If you need the notes delivered to your gift packer in one parcel, ask us first on the For business page. A watched Google Sheet, HubSpot, Zoho, Zapier and the API can all feed the list.
Quick answers
What is a short Diwali message for a client?
"Dear Shalini, happy Diwali to you and your family. Thank you for a good year together. Karan." Add one detail from the year if you have it.
Is it all right to send Diwali wishes to clients abroad?
Yes, if they have a link to the festival or to India. Order early, since post abroad takes one to three weeks. Families use the same route: see sending cards to family in India.
Should the note come from the company or a person?
A person. Sign with a first name and a role. "From all of us at Acme" is fine as a second line, never as the only one.
