A good thank-you note from a jeweller is three or four lines: the customer's name, the occasion they bought for, a plain thank-you, and the first name of the person who served them. Do not name the piece or its price on anything that travels by post. Send it a week or two after the sale, then on their wedding anniversary. Twenty notes follow, for India and the US.
What should a thank-you note to a jewellery customer say?
Name the person and the reason they came in: a daughter's wedding, a 25th anniversary, a first salary. Thank them for choosing you for it. Offer one useful thing, such as free cleaning or a resize. Sign with the name of the person who sat with them. Skip the discount code and the new collection.
Jewellery is not like other retail. People buy it rarely, for a day they will remember, and they often come back to the same family shop for decades. The note is for the day, not the receipt.
Leave the coupon out for a reason. Researchers Sanghwa Kim, Jeonghye Choi and Seung Hyun Kim tested thank-you notes on 1,232 customers of an online beauty shop. Customers who got no note later spent $25.97 on average. Those who got a handwritten note spent $52.07. A typed note made no difference, and the effect shrank or vanished when a coupon or free sample came with it (Science Says summary of the Journal of Interactive Marketing study). That was beauty products in South Korea, not gold in Jaipur, so treat it as a pointer and not a promise.
Why should a jeweller send notes at all?
Because the customer can now buy the same hallmarked gold in many places, and the relationship is what is left to compete on. A note costs little beside the sale, and it reaches the customer at home, where the next wedding is being planned.
The numbers show how crowded the counter is. Since hallmarking became mandatory in India, the number of jewellers registered with the Bureau of Indian Standards rose from 34,647 to 1,94,039, according to a government release in November 2024 (Press Information Bureau). Every one of them sells gold of certified purity. Purity no longer sets a shop apart.
India is the world's largest jewellery market. The World Gold Council reports that India bought 75 tonnes of gold jewellery in April to June 2026, which was 27 per cent of world demand, worth about ₹1,132 billion. With prices high, buyers chose lighter pieces and exchanged old gold more often (World Gold Council). When each visit is smaller, the visits you keep matter more.
In the US the trade is shrinking. The Jewelers Board of Trade counted 16,959 retail jewellers at the end of March 2025, down 3.4 per cent in a year (JCK). A card is one cheap way for an independent shop to stay in a customer's mind between visits.
And customers like notes more than shopkeepers expect. Amit Kumar and Nicholas Epley found in four experiments that people who wrote thank-you letters underestimated how pleased the reader would be (Psychological Science, 2018).
Thank-you notes after a purchase

Send these in an envelope, a week or two after the sale.

Notes for Akshaya Tritiya and Dhanteras
Akshaya Tritiya and Dhanteras are the two days many Indian families think of as lucky for buying gold. Dhanteras falls on Friday 6 November in 2026, and Akshaya Tritiya on Sunday 9 May in 2027, by the Drik Panchang calendar. A note that arrives the week before is a greeting first and a reminder second. Do not print offers on it.
Dear Mrs Agarwal, Shubh Dhanteras to you and your family. Your coin is kept aside, as it is every year. We open at nine. Mahesh
प्रिय श्रीमती अग्रवाल, आपको और आपके परिवार को धनतेरस की हार्दिक शुभकामनाएँ। सादर, महेश
Transliteration: Priya Shrimati Agarwal, aapko aur aapke parivaar ko Dhanteras ki haardik shubhkaamnaayein. Saadar, Mahesh. Meaning: "Dear Mrs Agarwal, heartfelt Dhanteras wishes to you and your family. With regards, Mahesh."
Dear Lakshmi amma, Akshaya Tritiya greetings. You have bought your granddaughters' first earrings from us four times now. We hope to see a fifth. Ramesh, Sri Lakshmi Jewellers
अक्षय तृतीया की हार्दिक शुभकामनाएँ, जोशी जी। सादर, कविता
Transliteration: Akshaya Tritiya ki haardik shubhkaamnaayein, Joshi ji. Saadar, Kavita. Meaning: "Heartfelt Akshaya Tritiya wishes, Joshi ji. With regards, Kavita."
Dear Dr Menon, happy Diwali from all of us. Thank you for another year of your custom, and for sending your sister to us in March. Thomas
Dear Priya, happy Diwali from New Jersey's smallest gold shop. Your mother's bangles are polished and ready to collect before Dhanteras. Sunil, Edison
Notes for a wedding anniversary
Ask for the wedding date when you sell wedding or engagement jewellery, and ask if you may write to them. Then the card can land on the day, every year.
Dear Riya and Aman, happy first anniversary. It feels like last month that you were arguing over the necklace length. You were both right. Mahesh
Dear Mr and Mrs Pillai, happy 25th anniversary. We made your rings in 2001 and we would be glad to polish them for the day. Thomas
Dear Emily and Josh, one year married today. Bring the ring in whenever you like and we will check the setting and clean it, no charge. Dana
Dear Mr and Mrs Okafor, happy 40th anniversary. My father sold you your bands. I am proud to look after them now. Marcus
Dear Sana and Imran, happy anniversary. Five years. I hope the bangles still chime when she walks in. Farah
Notes after a repair is collected
Dear Mrs Desai, thank you for trusting us with your mangalsutra. I know it is never easy to leave it, even for a day. The clasp should now hold for years. Kavita
Dear Mr Thompson, thank you for bringing in your father's watch. The strap pin is replaced and we checked the back seal. It deserved to be worn again. Dana
Dear Anjali, the chain is mended and we tightened two other links while we had it. No charge for those. Wear it in good health. Ramesh
When should each note go, and what sends it?
The thank-you goes a week or two after the sale, festival greetings the week before the festival, and anniversary cards on the day. Each one starts from something you already record: a bill, a customer list, or a date the customer gave you.
| Moment | Note should arrive | What starts it |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase | 7 to 14 days after the sale | A new row in a Google Sheet, or a Shopify, WooCommerce or Stripe order |
| Dhanteras, Akshaya Tritiya | The week before | One bulk send from your customer list |
| Wedding anniversary | On the day | A Schedule set once from the date the customer gave you |
| Repair collected | The week after | A row added at the repair desk |
| Referral ("my sister sent me") | Within two weeks | A row, with the referrer's name |
Most jewellers' billing software does not connect to us, so a watched Google Sheet or Zapier is the usual route. The shop adds a row at billing with the name, address and one line about the occasion.
How do you send notes without giving away a surprise?
Send nothing to the home until the gift has been given. A thank-you that reaches the house before the proposal ruins it. Ask at the counter, "Is this a surprise, and when is the day?", and date the note for after. Always use an envelope, and never name the piece, its weight or its price.
There is a safety reason too. A postcard that says "thank you for buying the 40-gram necklace" tells everyone who handles it what is in that house. A sealed card that says "thank you for choosing us for Riya's wedding" tells them nothing.
Ask permission to write. Most customers say yes when the question is "May we send you a card on your anniversary?" and not "Can we add you to our list?".
MailMyCard writes each note with a real pen, in English, Hindi, Tamil, Gujarati, Malayalam or any of 112 languages and scripts, and posts it from Bangalore. Inside India it arrives in days. To the US or UK, allow one to three weeks and check delivery times. A single card is $14.99, and a pilot of 50 is $8.99 a card. See For business for volume pricing.

Quick answers
What is a short thank-you message for a jewellery customer?
"Dear Ananya, thank you for choosing us for your first gold. Come in any time for free cleaning. Kavita." Name, occasion, thanks, a small offer of service, your name.
Should a jeweller put a discount in a thank-you card?
No. In the one good study, the lift from a handwritten note faded when a coupon was attached. Offer service instead: cleaning, a clasp check, a resize.
When should Dhanteras and Akshaya Tritiya greetings be posted?
So they arrive in the week before. In India that means ordering about two weeks ahead. For customers abroad, order a month ahead.
Can one shop send notes in several languages?
Yes. Add a language column to your sheet. Have a native reader check each greeting once before you use it.
