donor thank-you cards
donor thank-you cards,
that say what the gift did.
A good donor thank-you card arrives soon after the gift, names the donor and says what the money did. Handwriting alone may not raise the response: one trial of 1,132 donors found no real difference. So make the words specific, and test on your own list.
$5.15 a card, plus delivery.

How to thank donors, and keep them
Thank first, and ask later.
Thank them soon
Send a receipt at once, and the card soon after.
Say what the gift did
One real outcome is worth more than a line about your mission.
Ask for nothing
Leave the next appeal out of the thank-you.
Match the gift
Write by hand to first-time and large donors first, if you cannot reach everyone.
Report back
Later, tell them what happened because of them.
Sending them
From your donor list
Upload a CSV or watch a Google Sheet. Extra columns fill placeholders such as [Project].
From your CRM or form
Any tool that can post to a webhook can send a card for each gift. Connected CRMs send when a deal is won.
Keep a group back
Send nothing, or a printed note, to a similar group, then compare the next gift.
- You write
- Dear [Name], your gift helped us with [Project]. Thank you. It would not have happened without you.
- The pen writes
- Dear Priya, your gift helped us with the new library roof. Thank you. It would not have happened without you.
What the evidence says
We found no study showing that handwritten cards raise retention.
- Against us: thank-you postcards to 1,132 past donors drew a 19.3% response when handwritten and 18.7% when printed, which is no real difference. Adena, Huck and Neyse, Experimental Economics, 2025.
- People who wrote thank-you letters underestimated how pleased the reader would be, and overestimated how awkward it would feel. Kumar and Epley, Psychological Science, 2018.
- Direct mail to existing customers averaged a 6.3% response and £8.80 ROI, against 1% and £2.10 for cold mail. These are UK campaigns from 2023 to 2025, and they cover all mail, not handwriting. JICMAIL Response Rate Tracker 2026.
How to test it yourself
Split a list in two at random. Send cards to one half and nothing to the other, keeping everything else the same. After a few weeks, compare repeat orders, replies or gifts.

Questions
- Does handwriting raise donations?
- The best trial we found says not by itself: 19.3% against 18.7% among past donors of a German opera house. One trial is not the last word, so test yours.
- Can this replace a tax receipt?
- No. Send your receipt in the way your rules require. The card is only the thank-you.
- Are there charity prices?
- From 50 cards, prices drop and are agreed on a call. There is no separate charity rate today.
