repeat customers and retention
how to get repeat customers,
and keep them.
To get repeat customers, make the first experience reliable, make buying again easy, and stay in touch in a way that isn't always selling. Fix delivery and support first, because nothing else makes up for them. Then add personal moments, such as a handwritten thank-you, and measure the result.

How to improve customer retention
In order of what to fix first.
Keep the first promise
Deliver what you said, when you said. Everything after depends on this.
Answer problems fast
Ask why people leave, and fix the most common reason.
Make reordering easy
Saved details, reminders timed to when they run out, and a clear way to buy again.
Stay in touch without selling
Thank them, mark a date, or share something useful.
Notice who has gone quiet
Reach out before they have forgotten you.
Measure it
Track repeat purchase rate: customers who bought twice or more, divided by all customers in the period.
Where a card fits
After the first order
Shopify, WooCommerce and Stripe can send a card for each paid order.
On a milestone
Upload a list of customers reaching a year with you.
Before they drift
Send to a list of people who have not ordered lately. See customer win-back.
- You write
- Dear [Name], thank you for ordering again. It means a great deal to a small shop like ours.
- The pen writes
- Dear Priya, thank you for ordering again. It means a great deal to a small shop like ours.
What the evidence says
We found no study showing that handwritten cards raise retention.
- Direct mail to existing customers averaged a 6.3% response and £8.80 ROI, against 1% and £2.10 for cold mail. These are UK campaigns from 2023 to 2025, and they cover all mail, not handwriting. JICMAIL Response Rate Tracker 2026.
- A handwritten sticky note with a personal request roughly doubled survey returns: 76% against 36% in the first experiment. Garner 2005, summarised by the Behavioural Insights Team.
- Against us: thank-you postcards to 1,132 past donors drew a 19.3% response when handwritten and 18.7% when printed, which is no real difference. Adena, Huck and Neyse, Experimental Economics, 2025.
How to test it yourself
Split a list in two at random. Send cards to one half and nothing to the other, keeping everything else the same. After a few weeks, compare repeat orders, replies or gifts.

Questions
- Do handwritten cards increase customer retention?
- We found no study that shows it. Handwriting alone made no real difference in one donor trial, so test it on your own customers before you roll it out.
- What is a good repeat purchase rate?
- It varies too much by what you sell for one number to help. Compare against your own last period.
- Is this better than a loyalty programme?
- It does a different job. Points reward buying again, while a card thanks a person. Many businesses can run both.
