A good birthday note for a boyfriend is short and specific: his name or the one you use for him, one thing he does that you love, a memory from this year, and a wish for the next. Four lines is enough. Write it the way you talk to him, not the way a card shop does. Below are 25 notes to adapt, from sweet to funny to long distance.

What do you write in a birthday card for your boyfriend?

Write something only you could write. Pick one habit of his you love, one moment from this year, and one thing you hope for him. "Happy birthday, I love you" is true, but it is the line on every card. "Happy birthday to the man who parallel parks in one go and then tells everyone" is his.

A pattern that never fails:

  1. Open with his name, or the nickname he pretends to hate.
  2. Name one thing he does. Not "you're amazing" but "you always wait for me to finish my food before you get up".
  3. Bring in this year. The new job, the trip, the flat, the hard month you got through.
  4. Wish him something real. A promotion, the marathon time, more sleep.
  5. Sign it the way you sign texts to him.

If he is not a words person, you do not need many. The Gottman Institute, which studies couples, sums up its advice as "small things often make a big difference in our relationships" (The Gottman Institute). In its research, couples still married six years on had turned towards each other's small bids for attention 86 per cent of the time, against 33 per cent for couples who divorced (The Gottman Institute). A short card he keeps in his drawer is one of those small things.

Saying thank you inside it helps as well. In a study of 77 couples filmed thanking each other, Sara Algoe and colleagues found that partners who felt thanked saw the other as more responsive to their needs, and were more satisfied, six to nine months later (Greater Good, UC Berkeley).

Short birthday notes for a boyfriend

For the inside of a card, a sticky note on the mirror, or the line under a gift.

Happy birthday, you. Still my favourite person to do nothing with.

Happy birthday, Arjun. You make Mondays bearable and Sundays perfect.

To the man who always gives me the last bite: happy birthday. I noticed every time.

Happy birthday, love. Another year of you stealing my hoodies. I've made my peace with it.

Happy birthday, Sam. I would choose you again on every bad day and every good one.

Sweet birthday notes for a boyfriend

For when you want him to read it twice.

Happy birthday, Kabir. A year ago you were a nervous man holding the wrong flowers at the wrong café. Now you are the person I tell everything to first. I love you.

Happy birthday, Josh. This year you started a new job, learned to cook three things and held my hand through Dad's surgery. I am so proud of you, and so lucky.

Happy birthday, my love. You make me braver than I am. I hope this year gives you back even half of what you give me.

Happy birthday, Rohan. Thank you for every time you said "we'll figure it out" and then actually did. Here is to figuring out many more years together.

Happy birthday, Dan. My favourite sound is you laughing at your own joke before you finish telling it. Never stop.

If you worry it is too much, it probably is not. Xuan Zhao and Nicholas Epley found that people giving compliments underestimated how good the compliment would make the other person feel, and how well put they would find it (Psychology Today).

Funny birthday notes for a boyfriend

Tease him a little. End with one honest line so he knows you mean it.

Happy birthday to my favourite human and the world's worst driver of shopping trolleys. Love you anyway.

Happy birthday, Nikhil. You are now officially old enough to complain about your back. Welcome. I'll bring the balm.

Happy birthday. I got you this card and the gift of not mentioning what you did at the wedding. You're welcome.

Happy birthday, babe. You are handsome, kind and almost always right. Today I'll let you have the "almost".

Happy birthday to the man who says he isn't hungry and then eats half my fries. Get your own this year. Actually, don't.

Birthday notes for a new boyfriend

A few months in, keep it light and warm. Say you are glad, not that he is the one.

Happy birthday, Leo. I'm really glad I said yes to that coffee. Here's to many more.

Happy birthday, Aryan. Three months of you and I already know your chai order by heart. Have the best day.

Happy birthday, Tom. I hope this year is as fun as the last few weeks have been. Dinner's on me.

Long-distance birthday notes for a boyfriend

For a boyfriend in another city or another country. Name the distance, then name the day you will close it.

A young woman smiling as she reads a letter she has just taken out of a blue roadside mailbox
Miles away, and still something they can hold.

Happy birthday, Aman. 1,400 kilometres is a lot, but it is only 43 days until I see you. I am counting. Love, Riya

Happy birthday, love. I can't bake you a cake from Melbourne, so this card has to do. Open the second envelope at midnight your time.

Happy birthday, Karan. I miss you at all the small moments: chai, traffic, the end of a bad day. Soon, it'll be every day again.

Happy birthday from the wrong time zone. I set an alarm for your midnight so I could be the first. Hope it worked. Love, Ally

Happy birthday, Vikram. This is the last birthday we spend in different cities. I mean it. Start clearing a shelf for me.

Long birthday notes for a boyfriend

If you want to write more than a card holds, write it as a letter. Our guide to handwritten letter format shows the layout.

Happy birthday, Ishaan. I keep thinking about the night we got lost in Lonavala and you made it sound like a plan. That is what you do. You make the wrong turns feel like part of the trip. This year was full of wrong turns, the job, the flat, my exams, and you made every one of them feel like we were still going somewhere together. I don't say it enough: I'm proud of you, I'm grateful for you, and I can't wait to see what you do with twenty-nine. All my love, Tara

Happy birthday, Ben. I wanted to write down three things before the day gets busy. One: you make me laugh every single day, even the bad ones. Two: you are kinder to strangers than anyone I know, and I notice. Three: I hope this is the year you finally take the photography course, because you are good, and I want everyone to know it. Love always, Mia

How do you make a birthday note for your boyfriend special?

Add something he can hold or open, and tie it to your story: a handwritten card he can keep, a voice note so he hears you say it, or a photo from the day you met. If you are apart on the day, a digital birthday card opens on his phone at midnight with your words, photos and music.

A card about the two of you is a sentimental gift, and those land better than givers expect. Julian Givi and Jeff Galak found that givers pick gifts matched to a person's hobbies, while the people receiving them often prefer something sentimental, between friends and between partners alike (ScienceDaily).

For a bigger surprise, write him a digital love letter: a jar of reasons you love him, open-when letters for the days ahead, or a question only he can answer before it opens. Keep the card itself short and put the long version there.

What should you not write in a boyfriend's birthday card?

Skip anything that would embarrass him if his mum read it, because cards end up on shelves. Leave out complaints dressed as jokes, comparisons with exes, and pressure about the future ("next year, a ring?"). Do not copy a long poem from the internet; he will know. One honest line of yours is worth more.

How early should you write and send it?

For a card in the post, write it a week ahead and post it so it arrives a day or two early. Late is fine if you say so: "late, but every word meant". For a digital card, write it whenever you like and set it to open at midnight on his birthday.
