A personalised birthday message is three or four lines that could only be written to one person: their name or the pet name you use, one specific memory or habit of theirs, a wish that fits their year, and your name. Leave out the generic verse. One true detail makes it personal. Below are 30 messages to adapt, for a partner, mum, dad, friend, brother and sister.
What makes a birthday message personal?
A detail the reader recognises as theirs. "You are so kind" could go to anyone. "You still cut my mango into cubes like I am six" could go to one person. Use one memory, one habit or one thing they are doing this year. Then wish them something that fits it, and sign the way you sign to them.
A simple order works for every relationship:
- The name you call them. Amma, Papa, Didi, Bhai, babe, or their first name.
- One detail. A memory, a habit, a running joke, or what is happening in their life now.
- A wish that fits. Not "all the best", but the thing they actually want this year.
- How you sign off. "Love", "your favourite child", "always".
The name matters more than it looks. Keely Chace, a Hallmark writer, puts it this way: "Using your private pet name for the recipient can instantly make a simple message more warm and personal" (Hallmark).
If you are worried it will sound soppy, write it anyway. In a series of experiments, Amit Kumar and Nicholas Epley found that people writing letters of gratitude underestimated how happy the reader would be and overestimated how awkward they would feel (Chicago Booth). A birthday message is the yearly excuse to say it.
How long should a birthday message be?
Three to five sentences for most people. A card has room for about that much, and a short message with one real detail reads better than a long one with none. For a partner or a parent you may want more; write it as a letter, or put the long version in a digital card and keep the card itself short.
Cards are still the usual way to say it. Americans buy about 6.5 billion greeting cards a year, and birthday cards are the most popular kind, according to Greeting Card Association figures published by the US Postal Service (USPS News). The association's own fact sheet puts birthday cards at more than half of all cards sold, with about two-thirds of them mailed (Greeting Card Association).
People keep them, too. In a survey for Pilot Pen, a pen maker, 92 per cent of people said they had saved a handwritten card or letter from a loved one as a keepsake (PR Newswire). It is the maker's own survey, so read it as a sign, not a measurement.
Birthday messages for a partner
For a husband, wife, girlfriend or boyfriend, name something small that you love and they might not know you noticed. Our guide to birthday notes for a boyfriend has more of these.

Birthday messages for mum
Mothers keep cards. Write the thing you would say if you were braver on the phone. In Mother's Day research for Royal Mail, nearly 81 per cent of mothers said they would choose a card over a gift, and nearly 70 per cent preferred a card with a personal message from their children to a text (ChannelX, reporting Royal Mail). That was Mother's Day, not a birthday, and Royal Mail sells the stamps, but the point carries.

Happy birthday, Amma. I make your sambar every Sunday and it is never as good. Some things only you can do. Love you, Divya
Happy birthday, Mum. Thank you for driving me to every swimming lesson at six in the morning and never once complaining. I hope someone brings you breakfast today. Love, Jess

Birthday messages for dad
Many dads are uncomfortable with feelings on paper. Lead with a joke or a memory, then say the one serious line. A card is often the easiest place for it: "Cards are a perfect vehicle for saying the heartfelt things that can be hard to say face-to-face," as Hallmark's guide says of fathers.
Happy birthday, Papa. You taught me to drive in the Maruti and only shouted twice. I still check my mirrors the way you showed me. Love, Ankit
Happy birthday, Dad. Thank you for every match you stood through in the rain. I know now that you didn't care about football. You cared about me. Love, Ellie

How do you say happy birthday in Hindi?
Write जन्मदिन की हार्दिक शुभकामनाएँ (Janmadin ki haardik shubhkaamnaayein), "heartfelt wishes on your birthday". A shorter line is जन्मदिन मुबारक (Janmadin mubarak), "happy birthday". Put it at the top and write the rest in the language you speak together. A handwritten card can be written in its own script, Hindi included.
What should a birthday message leave out?
Leave out their age if they mind it, any comment on how they look, and anything that turns the card to you. Do not apologise for a late card at length; say "late, but meant" and move on. Avoid in-jokes that would embarrass them if someone else reads the card, because people put cards on shelves.
How do you send a personalised birthday message from far away?
Post a handwritten card so it lands a day or two early, or send a digital card that opens on their phone on the day. A digital birthday card carries your words, photos and a video. For a partner or a best friend, a birthday website goes further: photos, music, the reasons you love them and a quiz about the two of you, behind one link.
Either is better than letting the day pass. In studies of more than 5,900 people, Peggy Liu and colleagues found that people underestimate how much others appreciate being reached out to, more so when the contact is a surprise (ScienceDaily, reporting the American Psychological Association).
For a brother or sister abroad, our guide to sending cards to family in India covers addresses and timing, and the Raksha Bandhan messages work for the other day siblings mark.
