A good Diwali card is three or four lines: the person's name, a wish for light, health and a good year, one detail that belongs only to them, and your own name. Open with "Happy Diwali" or शुभ दीपावली (Shubh Deepavali). Diwali is on Sunday 8 November in 2026 and Friday 29 October in 2027, so post early. Twenty messages to copy follow.

What do you write in a Diwali card?

Write a greeting, a wish and a memory. The greeting is "Happy Diwali" or "Shubh Deepavali". The wish is for light, health, prosperity and a good year ahead. The memory is what makes it yours: the sweets your aunt makes, the rangoli at the door, the year the fireworks woke the baby. Sign with your first name. Three or four lines is plenty.

Diwali is the festival of lights. Hindus, Sikhs and Jains all mark it, and many families treat it as the start of a new year. Pew Research Center counts 1.2 billion Hindus worldwide, 95 per cent of them in India (Pew Research Center). But the people who most need a card are the ones far from home. India's foreign ministry told parliament in 2025 that 35.4 million Indians and people of Indian origin live abroad (Gulf Today, reporting the ministry's written answer).

How do you say Happy Diwali in Hindi, Gujarati and Tamil?

In Hindi, write शुभ दीपावली (Shubh Deepavali), which means "auspicious Diwali". In Gujarati, write શુભ દિવાળી (Shubh Diwali). In Tamil, write தீபாவளி நல்வாழ்த்துக்கள் (Deepavali nalvaazhthukkal), "good wishes for Deepavali". One line in the reader's own script, then the rest in the language you share, is enough.

Language Greeting How to say it Meaning
Hindi शुभ दीपावली Shubh Deepavali Auspicious Diwali
Hindi, longer दीपावली की हार्दिक शुभकामनाएँ Deepavali ki hardik shubhkamnayein Heartfelt good wishes for Diwali
Gujarati શુભ દિવાળી Shubh Diwali Auspicious Diwali
Gujarati, new year નૂતન વર્ષાભિનંદન Nutan Varshabhinandan Greetings for the new year
Tamil தீபாவளி நல்வாழ்த்துக்கள் Deepavali nalvaazhthukkal Good wishes for Deepavali

Many Gujarati families count the day after Diwali as their new year, so the new year line fits on the same card. In Tamil Nadu the festival is called Deepavali and is often kept a day earlier than in the north.

MailMyCard writes cards with a real pen in 112 languages and scripts, including Hindi, Gujarati, Tamil, Bengali, Punjabi and Malayalam. Type the greeting in its own script and it is written that way.

Dhanteras and Bhai Dooj

Diwali runs for five days. Dhanteras opens the festival, when many families buy gold, silver or new utensils. Bhai Dooj closes it and belongs to brothers and sisters. In 2027 Dhanteras is on 27 October and Bhai Dooj on 31 October (Drik Panchang, for New Delhi).

Dear Neha, शुभ धनतेरस (Shubh Dhanteras). I hear you finally bought the silver lamp you have looked at for two years. May it bring the house luck. Love, Aarti

Dear Vikram bhaiya, Happy Bhai Dooj. I cannot put the tilak on your forehead from Toronto, so this card will have to do. Eat something sweet for me. Your sister, Isha

If the card is for a brother or sister, our guide to Raksha Bandhan messages for a brother has more in the same spirit.

What do you write in a Diwali card for a client or a team?

Keep it to thanks and good wishes. Name one thing you did together this year, wish them and their family a happy Diwali, and sign it as a person, not as the company. Leave out offers, price lists and next year's targets. For a team, send the card to the home address and have a manager who knows the person sign it.

Dear Mr Mehta, Happy Diwali to you and your family. Thank you for trusting us with the Andheri showroom this year. It was a pleasure from the first drawing. Warm wishes, Sanjay

Dear Ritika, Shubh Deepavali. Eight years as our client. You were our third customer when the office was one room. Wishing you a bright year. Deepa

Dear Dr Rao, Happy Diwali. Thank you for the three families you sent our way this year. We looked after them as you would have. With thanks, Farah

Dear Imran, Happy Diwali to you and the family. Thank you for a first year that felt like you had been here five. The night shift is lucky to have you. Shalini

Dear Lakshmi, Shubh Deepavali. Twenty years with the firm this month. Most of us learned the job by watching you do it. Thank you. Gopal

Business gifting at Diwali is large. Chococraft, a gifting company, citing ET Retail, puts India's corporate gifting market at ₹12,000 crore in 2022 (Chococraft). That is a vendor's summary, so treat it as a rough size. Every client gets a box of dry fruit. Few get a line written to them by name.

Be honest about what a card can do. In a 2022 study of 1,232 customers of an online beauty shop, a handwritten thank-you note roughly doubled later spending, from $25.97 to $52.07, while a typed note did nothing. The effect faded when a coupon came with it (Science Says, summarising Kim, Choi and Kim). So no discount code on a Diwali card.

Handwriting is not magic in bulk, though. A 2025 field experiment sent thank-you postcards to 1,132 past donors. Handwritten cards got a 19.3 per cent response and printed ones 18.7 per cent, which is no real difference (Adena, Huck and Neyse, Experimental Economics). The same sentence to 500 clients is a mailshot. For notes that travel inside a gift box, see our guide to corporate Diwali gift notes.

On the picture: lamps, rangoli and marigolds are welcome everywhere. Pictures of deities are for families you know well, not for a client list.

When should you post a Diwali card so it arrives in time?

Post so the card lands in the week before Diwali. For an address in India, order about two weeks ahead. For an address abroad, order four weeks ahead, because international post takes one to three weeks. For Diwali on 8 November 2026, that means ordering in early October for cards going overseas (Diwali dates, diwali.info).

MailMyCard posts from India, which helps most when the card is going to family in India. Here is how we would plan it.

Moment Order by What can trigger it
Family in India Two weeks before Diwali You, on the site. Or a Schedule set once for every year
Family and friends abroad Four weeks before Diwali You, on the site, with a QR code for a voice note
Client list Four to five weeks before A Google Sheet we watch, or HubSpot, Zoho, Pipedrive
Team at home addresses Four weeks before A Google Sheet or Zapier
Bhai Dooj card to a sibling With the Diwali cards Same order, second card

We do not promise an exact day. The delivery time calculator turns the window into dates for any country.

A single card is $14.99. Businesses sending 50 or more agree a price per card, from $8.99 for a pilot of 50 and falling with volume. See For business. A card can carry a QR code that opens a voice note or a video. Pick a picture from our card designs, and see our guide to sending cards to family in India for addresses and PIN codes.

Paper cards are still a habit: Americans buy about 6.5 billion a year, according to the Greeting Card Association. A WhatsApp forward is read by forty people at once. A card is read by one.

Questions people ask

Is it Diwali or Deepavali?

Both are right. Deepavali is the older Sanskrit word, meaning a row of lamps, and is the usual name in South India, Sri Lanka, Singapore and Malaysia. Diwali is the shorter form used across North India. Use the one the family uses. If you do not know, write "Happy Diwali".

Can I send a Diwali card if I am not Hindu?

Yes. A plain "Happy Diwali to you and your family" is welcome from anyone. You do not need a Hindi phrase. Do not guess at religious wording.

Is a Diwali card late if it arrives after Diwali?

A little, but it is not wasted. The festival runs five days. If you are already late, write "Happy Diwali and a happy new year" and post it anyway.
