A good Raksha Bandhan message to a brother far away is three or four lines: his name or the pet name only you use, one memory from growing up, a line about missing him, and a wish for his health and safety. Open with "Happy Raksha Bandhan" or रक्षाबंधन की हार्दिक शुभकामनाएँ. In 2027 the festival is on Tuesday 17 August. Twenty notes to copy follow.

What do you write to a brother on Raksha Bandhan?

Write what you would say while tying the thread. Use the name you call him at home. Bring up one memory: the cricket bat he would not share, the exam he helped you pass, the lie he told your parents for you. Say you miss him. Wish him health and safety. Tease him a little. Then sign it. Four lines is plenty.

Raksha Bandhan means "the bond of protection". A sister ties a thread, the rakhi, on her brother's wrist, and he gives her a gift in return. It is kept mostly in North, West and Central India and in Nepal, and by Indian families wherever they live (Wikipedia). Today it is just as often between cousins, between sisters, or from a brother to a sister.

Many of those brothers and sisters live far apart. India's foreign ministry told parliament in 2025 that 35.4 million Indians and people of Indian origin live abroad, 15.9 million of them Indian citizens (Gulf Today, reporting the ministry's written answer). Pew Research Center counts 5.2 million people of Indian origin in the United States alone in 2023 (Pew Research Center).

How do you say Happy Raksha Bandhan in Hindi?

Write रक्षाबंधन की हार्दिक शुभकामनाएँ (Raksha Bandhan ki hardik shubhkamnayein). It means "heartfelt good wishes for Raksha Bandhan". A shorter line is राखी की शुभकामनाएँ (Rakhi ki shubhkamnayein), "good wishes for Rakhi". Put it at the top of the card, then write the rest in the language the two of you speak.

Hindi How to say it Meaning
रक्षाबंधन की हार्दिक शुभकामनाएँ Raksha Bandhan ki hardik shubhkamnayein Heartfelt good wishes for Raksha Bandhan
राखी की शुभकामनाएँ Rakhi ki shubhkamnayein Good wishes for Rakhi
प्यारे भैया Pyare bhaiya Dear brother
प्यारी दीदी Pyari didi Dear elder sister
प्यारी बहना Pyari behna Dear sister

Messages for a cousin, or a sister-in-law

In some families, Marwari ones especially, a sister also sends a second rakhi, the lumba, for her brother's wife.

Dear Yash, Happy Rakhi. We are cousins on paper and brother and sister in every way that counts. Summer holidays at Nani's house in Indore made sure of that. Love, Khushi

Dear Bhabhi, Happy Raksha Bandhan. There is a lumba in the envelope for you. Thank you for looking after my brother so well, and for sending me the photos he forgets to. Payal

Dear Simran, Happy Rakhi. I have no brother, so you get the thread. You have stood up for me since nursery school. With love, your sister Gurleen

Dear Harsh, Happy Raksha Bandhan. We have not spoken properly since Dadi's funeral. I miss you. Here is a rakhi and an open hand. Your cousin, Swati

Why post a rakhi and a note when you can video call?

Because the thread has to be there to be tied, and the note is what stays after the call ends. A rakhi by post is an old habit, not a new one. A video call is over in ten minutes. The card sits on his desk through the year.

The post office plans for it. India Post sets up special rakhi booking counters before the festival, and its tracked packet service carries rakhis to 135 countries (The Sunday Guardian). The trade is large as well. The Confederation of All India Traders, a trade body, expected Rakhi business of about ₹17,000 crore in 2025 (CAIT). That is the traders' own estimate, not an audited figure.

Families abroad stay tied to home in other ways. The World Bank estimated that India received $129 billion in remittances in 2024, more than any other country (World Bank). Money is sent every month. A note is sent once a year.

If writing it feels awkward, write it anyway. Amit Kumar and Nicholas Epley found in 2018 that people who wrote letters of thanks underestimated how pleased the reader would be and overestimated how awkward it would feel (Psychological Science). Brothers are no different.

One honest limit. MailMyCard writes and posts the card. It does not put a rakhi thread in the envelope. If the thread itself must travel, post it yourself or through a rakhi seller, and let the card go alongside. A card can carry a QR code that opens a voice note or a video, so he can hear you say the words.

When should you post a rakhi card so it arrives in time?

Post so it lands in the week before Raksha Bandhan. For a brother abroad, order four weeks ahead, since international post takes one to three weeks. For a brother or sister in India, two weeks ahead is a safe margin. Raksha Bandhan 2027 is on Tuesday 17 August (Drik Panchang, for New Delhi), so aim to order by mid-July for cards going overseas.

Who it is for Order by How
Brother abroad, sister in India Four weeks before On the site. Post the rakhi thread yourself at the same time
Sister in India, brother abroad Two weeks before On the site. We post from India, so this is the quick direction
Both abroad Four weeks before On the site, with a QR voice note
Every year, without fail Set once A Schedule, checked each year because the date moves
A family shop sending to customers Five weeks before A Google Sheet we watch, or Shopify

MailMyCard posts from India. That makes the brother-to-sister card, going to an address in India, the easy one. We do not promise an exact day. The delivery time calculator turns the window into dates for any country.

A single card is $14.99. Our guide to sending cards to family in India covers addresses and PIN codes, and the addressing guide covers other countries. Rakhi sellers who want a handwritten note in every order can see the For business page. Bhai Dooj, at the end of Diwali, is the other day for brothers and sisters, and our Diwali card messages include notes for it.

Questions people ask

Can a brother tie the rakhi himself?

Yes, in practice many do. When a sister cannot be there, a brother ties it himself, or his wife, a friend or another relative ties it for him. Families differ, so follow what yours does. Send a photo back. It matters to her.

What if the rakhi arrives after Raksha Bandhan?

Tie it on the day it arrives. A late rakhi with a warm note is better than none. Say "this one is late, the love is not" and move on.

Is Raksha Bandhan only for brothers and sisters by birth?

No. Cousins, close friends and sisters-in-law are often included, and some sisters tie rakhis to each other. The message stays the same: I am on your side.

Should I send a gift with the card?

It is the custom for a brother to give his sister a gift or money. From abroad, a bank transfer and a handwritten card work well together. The card is what makes the transfer feel like a gift.
