To address an envelope, write the recipient's name, street address, and city, state and postcode in the middle of the front, put your own return address in the top left corner, and put the stamp in the top right corner.

A US example

MARIA LOPEZ
1420 W GRACE ST APT 3
CHICAGO IL 60613-2812

Name on the first line. Street and apartment on the second. City, two-letter state and ZIP code together on the last. The Postal Service lists standard abbreviations such as APT, STE and UNIT, and prefers the unit at the end of the street line (USPS Publication 28). If you use a pound sign, leave a space before the number.

UK and India

  • UK: name, house number and street, post town in capitals, then the postcode alone on the last line.
  • India: name, flat and street, locality, then the city followed by the six-digit PIN code.

Posting abroad? Add the country name in capitals on a final line.

Return address and stamp

Your return address goes top left, so the card comes back to you if it cannot be delivered. The stamp goes top right. Keep the bottom edge clear and write straight, not slanted.

How we address ours

Our envelope (6.25 by 4.25 inches) is addressed from the address you give us. Paste the address as the recipient would write it. For a card posted from a store, the address comes straight from the order. See how to address a postcard for Canada, Australia and the international rule.

When you would like the message in real handwriting, send a handwritten card.
