welcome new customers
welcome new customers,
in a way they keep.
Welcome new customers quickly, by name, and with what happens next. Send a welcome email the same day for the practical details. Then follow it with something slower: a short handwritten card in the first week, from a real person, asking for nothing.
$5.15 a card, plus delivery.

Welcome messages to copy
Change the words in brackets.
A shop
Dear [Name], thank you for your first order. I packed it myself. If anything is not right, write to me and I will fix it.
A service
Dear [Name], welcome. Your first appointment is with [Person], who is looking forward to meeting you.
A software company
Dear [Name], thank you for joining. I read every reply, so tell me what you hoped we would do for you.
A client firm
Dear [Name], thank you for trusting us. If you ever need something and do not know who to ask, ask me.
How the card goes out
After a first order
Shopify, WooCommerce and Stripe send a card for each paid order. They cannot tell a first order from a repeat one yet.
After a won deal
Connected CRMs send a card to the contact when a deal is won.
From your own signal
Any tool that can post to a webhook, or a new row in a watched Google Sheet, can send it.
- You write
- Dear [Name], thank you for your first order. I packed it myself.
- The pen writes
- Dear Priya, thank you for your first order. I packed it myself.
What the evidence says
We found no study showing that handwritten cards raise retention.
- A handwritten sticky note with a personal request roughly doubled survey returns: 76% against 36% in the first experiment. Garner 2005, summarised by the Behavioural Insights Team.
- People who wrote thank-you letters underestimated how pleased the reader would be, and overestimated how awkward it would feel. Kumar and Epley, Psychological Science, 2018.
- Against us: thank-you postcards to 1,132 past donors drew a 19.3% response when handwritten and 18.7% when printed, which is no real difference. Adena, Huck and Neyse, Experimental Economics, 2025.
How to test it yourself
Split a list in two at random. Send cards to one half and nothing to the other, keeping everything else the same. After a few weeks, compare repeat orders, replies or gifts.

Questions
- Should a welcome card replace the welcome email?
- No. Email is instant and holds links and receipts. The card comes later and does a different job.
- How soon does it arrive?
- It is handed to the post within 3 business days, then travels. Plan for it to arrive after the order, not with it.
- Can it go only to first-time buyers?
- Not from a shop connection today. Send from your own tool through a webhook, or upload a weekly list of new customers.
